Mobile Computers with Barcode Scanner

For standard receiving, dispatch, order picking and inventory counting, a rugged mobile computer with a 2D imager is usually a versatile choice. Battery life, display size, ergonomics, durability and compatibility with the application used in the warehouse should also be considered.

A 1D scanner is designed for traditional linear barcodes. A 2D imager can also scan QR codes, Data Matrix and other 2D symbologies in addition to standard 1D barcodes. For new deployments, a 2D imager is therefore generally the more versatile option.

A Long Range scanner is useful when the operator cannot bring the mobile computer close to the barcode. Typical applications include high warehouse racks, pallets and scanning from forklifts or other material-handling equipment. For close-range scanning, a standard-range scanner is usually more appropriate.

Yes. A 2D imager is normally capable of scanning both two-dimensional codes and standard 1D barcodes. A single mobile computer can therefore handle different barcode symbologies used throughout a warehouse or manufacturing facility.

It depends on the workflow. Touchscreen mobile computers are versatile and offer familiar Android-style operation. A physical keypad can be more practical when operators frequently enter quantities, warehouse locations, item codes or other data.

In professional environments, a mobile computer may be used throughout an entire shift and exposed to drops, dust and other demanding conditions. The device should therefore be selected according to its actual operating environment, not only by processor performance or display size.
